Nasal decongestant drops are medicines applied inside the nostrils to reduce swollen blood vessels and provide short-term relief from a blocked nose. They are different from non-medicated saline drops, so shoppers should check the active ingredient, strength, intended age group and number of permitted daily doses.
Follow the exact leaflet and do not assume that an adult product is suitable for a child. NHS guidance advises against decongestants for children under six and states that medicated nasal drops should not normally be used for more than five days, because prolonged use can make congestion worse. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing heart, blood-pressure, thyroid, eye or circulation conditions should consult a pharmacist or doctor.
